Nature Workshop 5 - John Muir Award

The John Muir Award is designed to cover all of the above workshops and much more. Participants work toward an award receiving a certificate upon completion.

The John Muir Award at each level, (level 1 - Discovery Award, Level 2 - Explorer Award, Level 3 - Conserver Award), consists of four challenges. These are:

• Discover a wild place
• Explore its wildness
• Conserve a wild place
• Share your experiences

The John Muir Award, delivered by EnchantedForest is an opportunity for all children and young people to:

• Gain outdoor skills such as shelter building, fire lighting, cooking on an open fire, making string, besoms, hurdles and learning about the uses of plants and trees.
• Learn about conservation and why it is important by experiencing traditional habitat management methods.
• Develop team work skills through environmental team building games and activities.
• Be creative. Their will be many opportunities for participants to have a go at silk painting, making things out of willow such as dream catchers and kites, making sustainable bags, working with clay and other natural materials.
• Experience earthwalks and relaxation techniques. Earthwalks open up your awareness to the natural world by stimulating and using your senses. During earthwalk activities participants will have plenty of time to experience nature as an individual rather than focusing on team activities.
• Understanding ecology through science based activities. Activities include discovering and exploring trees and woodlands where participants are involved in minibeast hunts, plant identification, ecological games, and trails.
• Understand the term sustainability through activities, games and crafts.

The John Muir Award can be run at Stansted and potentially within the grounds of the school.

EnchantedForest will need 15 hours contact time with participants for them to gain the award.

Participants will receive John Muir diaries, all materials and resources in which the end products can be taken away, membership to the RSPB, CD of photographs, and of course a lovely presented certificate at the end. Other opportunities for the schools are:

• The John Muir Award can contribute to a pupils Trailblazer Award
• Links with environmental organisations which offer free educational resources and materials
